Description
Aerial view of construction work at the Hanford liquefied high-level atomic waste storage facility at Richland, Washington state. Each tank has a capacity of one million gallons of liquefied high- level waste. The tanks are of a double-shell construction, surrounded by reinforced concrete and covered with ten feet of earth. When complete, the tanks are heated to over 600 Celsius to allow stresses in the welds to even out. The tanks were designed to store waste from the US Defence nucear programme.
