Description
Hepatitis A virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The particles are composed of a protein coat encapsulating ribonucleic acid (RNA) genetic material. During infection, the virus attacks the liver and causes liver inflammation, fever and jaundice. It is usually transmitted person-to-person via the faecal/oral route, such as through ingestion of faecally contaminated food or water. The disease is more prevalent in warm countries with poor standards of hygiene.
