Description
Henry Wriothesly (1573-1624), 3rd Earl of Southampton, English nobleman. Wriothesly studied at St John's College, at the University of Cambridge. By the 1590s he was spending much time at the court of Queen Elizabeth, and became a Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1603 (under King James). A number of writers dedicated works to him, including Shakespeare, Thomas Nashe, Barnabe Barnes, Gervase Markham, and William Burton. Wriothesly was a patron of the arts as well as investing in colonial enterprises, exploration and conquests. He died of a fever while commanding troops in the Low Countries fighting the Spanish.
