Henry Walter Bates (1825-92) English traveller and naturalist who, with Alfred Russell Wallace, explored the Amazon (1848-1859). Bates, with native help, capturing an alligator on the River Amazon. Natives also presenting specimens of turtles. Hand-coloured engraving.
