Artist's Description

Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935), US palaeontologist. Osborn obtained a doctorate in palaeontology from Princeton in 1880, spending seven years there as a lecturer. He then moved to New York and became a professor of zoology at Columbia University and also a curator in palaeontology at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). From 1908 to 1933 he was President of the AMNH, ensuring its fossil collection became one of the best in the world. His scientific work is now seen by later commentators as overshadowed by his racist views on eugenics, the selective improvement of human population genetics. Photographed circa 1907.
