Hell Gate Bridge construction, New York City, USA. This steel through-arch railroad bridge, built from 1912, was opened in September 1916. It was designed by Austrian-US engineer Gustav Lindenthal (1850-1935). Two travelling cranes (centre), used to construct each side of the arch, have met in the middle at a height of 93 metres. The railroad level and the two towers either side are not yet built. This bridge spans 310 metres, crossing Hell Gate, a tidal strait in New York's East River. At the time, it was the world's longest steel arch bridge. This photograph, from the Bain News Service, dates from 30 September 1915.
