Artist's Description
Heinz lead-acid battery. Historical illustration of the accumulator (storage) lead-acid battery designed by the A. Heinz company of Levallois, France. The lead-acid battery was invented by French physicist Gaston Plante (1834-1889) in 1859. His design was improved on by later inventors who built sealed and portable versions, such as the lead-acid battery shown here, which has plates of lead oxide paste pressed into a lattice and immersed in sulphuric acid. Accumulator batteries store large amounts of electrical energy Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
