Heart muscle fibres. Coloured diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scan of a mouse heart showing the myofibres (muscle fibres). Different colours correspond to different orientations of fibre. Myofibres on the inside and outside of the heart chambers spiral in different directions. When the fibres contract this configuration creates an upward twisting motion that expels blood from the heart. DTI is a non-destructive technique. This heart measures approximately 1 centimetre across.
