Description
Petri dishes. Gloved hands of a researcher hold petri dishes which have colonies of microorganisms growing on the gel inside them. The micro- organisms came from a sample which was smeared across the gel. Microorganisms multiplied into colonies using the gel as a nutrient. These colonies can be counted, removed and analysed. Agar gel is used as a nutrient to raise colonies of bacteria. A culture of living cells or a blood culture is needed to generate a virus colony; this is because viruses cannot multiply without infecting other cells.
