Description
Vaginal bacteria culturing. Hand wiping a vaginal swab across a petri dish. The dish contains an agar nutrient gel so that any bacteria transferred from the swab will multiply and grow to form colonies. These can be counted, removed and analysed. This swab was used to sample high in the vagina to check for the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterial cause of the sexually- transmitted disease gonorrhoea. Vaginal swabs consist of a piece of cotton wool on the end of a thin stick.
