Description
These drawings of the bones of a human hand and wrist from various viewpoints, together with dissection of the tendons and ligaments of the fingers, demonstrate Leonardo da Vinci's accuracy of observation and skill of portrayal. These drawings mark the initiation of a fundamental change in osteological illustration where for centuries conventionalism based on the teachings of Galen and Avicenna prevailed. It was Leonardo who first portrayed the parts of the human skeleton accurately in form and proportions which, with the accompanying notes, allowed an understanding of their purpose and function.
