Greek fire being used in a naval battle, illustration. Greek fire was a combustible incendiary material used as a weapon by Eastern Roman Empire (also known as the Byzantine Empire). Its use dates from around the 7th century. It ignited on contact with water, and it thought to have been based on naphtha and quicklime.
