Description
Golden Spike Ceremony to mark the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the USA. This ceremony took place on 10 May 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah. Leland Stanford (centre), President of the Central Pacific Railroad, ceremonially performed the joining of the two railroads that met here. Other ceremonial spikes were also driven into the railroad. Several hundred people attended, including railroad workers and engineers. The two locomotives are Central Pacific No. 60 (left, the Jupiter) and Union Pacific No. 119 (right).
