Description
Gold mine workers in Ancient Egypt. 19th-century artwork of name cartouches written in hieroglyphics, giving the names of prisoners working in gold mines in Ethiopia controlled by Ancient Egypt. These names were inscribed on the pedestal of a statue held at the Louvre, Paris, France. The inscription dates from the time of Rameses II (Rameses the Great, reigned 1279 BC–1213 BC). This copy of the cartouches was published as part of a paper by British Egyptologist and antiquarian Samuel Birch (1813-1885). Published as in Volume 34, Issue 2 (1852) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
