Artist's Description
Earth's weather with a hurricane. False-colour satellite image showing the Earth and some of its weather. Red and green channels of this image represent visible light data, blue colours are derived from infrared data. Among the cloud patterns seen here is Hurricane Andrew, the compact white area with a distinct dark 'eye' in the Gulf of Mexico (toward upper right). Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage in Florida and Louisiana, even though it was tracked continually from space. The data for this image were gathered by the GOES-7 weather satellite on 24 August 1992.
