The Egyptians believed in Cosmic order. and measured time by the annual cycle of the Nile and the daily progress of the sun across the sky. This is illustrated in a series of vignettes from the Book of the Dead, the papyrus of Ani. 1275 BC., depicting various gods associated with the progress from night, through day, to nightfall. First, the cat, Ra, cutting off the head of a serpent represents the slaying of the dragon of Darkness. Second is Ani and his wife adoring the scarab-headed sun-god Chepera seated in the solar bark with two cynocephali, spirits of dawn, raising their hands in adoration. Before them is the eye of the returning sun. Next is the god Tmu, the closer of the day, seated within the solar disk in the Solar Bark. A serpent symbolizing the dawn appears among the lotus flowers that surround a couchant lion.
