Description
Glucose burning in oxygen. Glucose on a metal spoon being burnt in a glass gas jar filled with oxygen. Glucose is a hydrocarbon, and as such reacts with oxygen (burns) to produce carbon dioxide and water vapour, leaving behind carbon. This process releases a large amount of energy. Glucose is a simple sugar. It is found in the blood and is metabolised by humans to obtain energy. Metabolism releases an equivalent amount of energy to burning, but in a slower, more controlled, and less direct way.
