Artist's Description

M3 globular star cluster (NGC 5272). Globular star clusters are large, densely-packed balls of old stars. M3 contains over 500,000 stars and is about 160 light years across. Globular star clusters form a spherical halo around the Milky Way Galaxy, which includes M3 at a distance of around 100,000 light years in the constellation Canes Venatici. This is a combined mid-ultraviolet (MUV, B-band) and near-infrared (Z-band) image taken by the WIYN Tip-Tilt Module (WTTM) on the 3.5-metre telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona, USA, on 22 March 2003.
