Description
Glass bust of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), German composer. Beethoven's early life was made miserable by his father, who wanted him to be a profitable child prodigy. Beethoven was musically influenced by Mozart and Haydn, under both of whom he studied. His style of grand orchestration was very individual, typified by the colossal Ninth symphony ('Choral') of 1823 and the Mass in D. His other great works include the demanding Violin concerto, many piano sonatas and his last five quartets. Increasingly deaf in his later years, his genius never wavered. He died at Vienna in 1827 having contracted a severe chill.
