Description
'Gin Lane' (1751), satirical engraving by William Hogarth (1697-1764). 'Gin Lane' was issued along with 'Beer Street' (see C038/2617) as a comment on the merits of beer and the evils of gin. In 'Gin Lane' the inhabitants are shown as destroyed by their addiction to the alcoholic spirit gin. Scenes depicted include infanticide, starvation, madness, decay and suicide.
