Artist's Description
Section of the paving in the Villa Romana, Desenzano. It consists of a series of mosaic panels containing complex geometric designs including several versions of the ancient symbol formed by two interlaced cords in a closed loop, the so-called “Solomon's Knot” (in Latin, sigillum Salomonosis) referring to the wisdom of the Biblical monarch. The collection of knots, crosses, octagons and other symbols were perhaps intended to ward off evil.
