Description
General Washington at Trenton. Painting of George Washington (1732-1799) as general on the battlefield at Trenton on 26 December 1776 during the American Revolutionary War (the American War of Independence). Born into a Virginian planter family in 1732, Washington commanded the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and was elected the first US President. He served for two terms from 1789 to 1797, but refused to serve for a third term. This lithograph dates from 1845. The original oil painting is by artist John Trumbull (1756-1843). It dates from circa 1792 and is titled 'George Washington Before the Battle of Trenton'.
