Gas cloud-galactic black hole approach. Infrared observations of a gas cloud falling towards the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. These are VLT observations from 2006, 2010 and 2013 (coloured blue, green and red respectively). Only the position can be discerned in these observations, though the cloud has been stretched and pulled apart. The galactic centre (Sgr A*) is around 25,000 light years distant in the constellation of Sagittarius. Image obtained by the SINFONI (Spectrograph for Integral Field Observations in the Near Infrared) sensor on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Image published in 2013.
