Description
Gas chamber at Wyoming Frontier Prison, the former Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, Wyoming, USA. This prison opened in 1901 and closed 80 years later in 1981. Between 1901 and 1981, sixteen convicted murderers were executed in Wyoming. Eleven were executed by hanging and five by use of this gas chamber. The gas chamber executions took place between 1937 and 1965. The condemned prisoner was strapped into a chair in the airtight chamber, and potassium cyanide pellets triggered to drop into sulphuric acid, producing the lethal gas hydrogen cyanide. This method is now mostly banned as inhumane. Photographed in 2015.
