Artist's Description
Garden spider (Araneus diadematus) feeding on a common wasp (Vespa vulgaris), caught in its web. This spider is an orb-weaver spider that is found in Western Europe and parts of North America. Its third pair of legs are specially adapted for spinning its webs, which are used to catch its insect prey. The female, which is larger than the male, can reach a body length of 2 centimetres. The common wasp is a eusocial insect that forms colonies in nests. It is found in much of Eurasia. The worker wasps forage for nest material, and feed on nectar and fruit.
