Gamma ray burst (GRB) 090429B, Swift image. GRBs are extremely high-energy events that occur when a star is torn apart by powerful jets that form as it collapses. The burst of gamma rays lasts only seconds, but it triggers sensors on orbiting satellites that record the afterglow. This GRB was imaged by the Burst Alert Telescope on NASA's Swift X-ray satellite. GRB 090429B is located in the constellation Canes Venatici and, at a distance of 13.14 billion light years (redshift of 9.4), is one of the most distant objects ever recorded, dating from the early history of the universe. GRB 090429B was detected on 29 April 2009.
