Description
Galileo on sunspots. Title page of 'Istoria' (1613) by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) about his pioneering sunspot observations of 1612 using his telescope. The following year, he published his observations in 'Istoria e Dimostrazioni Intorno Alle Macchie Solari e Loro Accidenti' (1613, History and Demonstrations Concerning Sunspots and their Properties). The Italian text names Galileo as philosopher and mathematician of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and member of the Lyncean Academy (founded 1603, lynx symbol at lower centre), who published this work. Also named is Galileo's correspondent German scholar Marc Welser (1558-1614).
