Artist's Description
Galileo National Telescope and clouds. Dome of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The TNG has a 3.58-metre diameter mirror on an alt-azimuthal mount. It has an active optics system which adjusts the mirror's shape to compensate for movement or differences in air temperature. It is raised above the heat haze near the ground. The telescope's high altitude (2358 metres), and the clear air above it, minimises atmospheric distortions. The TNG, opened in 1998, is operated by a foundation set up by the Italian Institute of Astrophysics. Photographed in 2013.
