Description
Galaxy formation. Map of hydrogen gas around the radio galaxy 1138-262. The map shows the density of gas from blue (less dense) through green and red to yellow (densest), and shows the galaxy in the early stages of formation. The galaxy is about 10 billion light years from Earth. This image was made using the Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
