Artist's Description
Fuming chemicals, Schlieren image. The chemicals in the flask and beaker are evaporating to produce the gaseous fumes seen rising upwards. These fumes are seen by Schlieren photography, a way of seeing density differences in transparent materials. Both the density difference, which is also responsible for the gases rising upwards, and gas turbulence, cause the light passing through the air to bend (refract). The imaging method alters the colour or brightness of this refracted light.
