Description
Fuming chemical, Schlieren image. The chemical in the beaker is evaporating to produce the gaseous fumes seen rising upwards. These fumes are seen by Schlieren photography, a way of seeing density differences in transparent materials. Both the density difference, which is also responsible for the gas rising upwards, and gas turbulence, cause the light passing through the air to bend (refract). The imaging method alters the colour or brightness of this refracted light.
