Artist's Description

Full Moon in 1870s, stereoscopic card. These are paired stereoscopic images which provide a 3D image (stereogram) when viewed side-by-side. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further over the centuries as telescopes improved. The far side of the Moon was not observed until the era of spaceflight. Image prepared from negatives obtained with a silvered glass telescope by US astronomer Henry Draper (1837-1882) in around 1875. Published by Charles Bierstadt (New York) and sold by Underwood and Underwood.
