Description
'Hydrostaticks', the title page and frontispiece of Robert Boyle's book of 1690. This book includes the use of Archimedes' Principle of fluid displacement in the analysis of ores and medicines using the concept of specific gravity. Boyle (1627-91) was one of the greatest experimenters in the history of science. He worked on gases and the vacuum, making many important observations. The most famous of these, the relationship between gas pressure and volume, is known as Boyle's Law. He effectively moved chemistry out of the age of alchemy, and was instrumental in the founding of the Royal Society. In later age he devoted most of his time to religion and philosophy.
