Description
Frictional thermite reaction. Friction igniting a thermite reaction. This occurs when an aluminium object strikes an oxidised surface, in this case a rusty object (iron oxide). This is part of research carried out by what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Photographed in the 1980s.
