Frederick Chapman Robbins (1916-2003), US physician, virologist and Nobel laureate, using a microscope. Robbins shared the 1954 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with John Franklin Enders and Thomas Huckle Weller. The share of the Nobel was awarded for Robbins's discovery that polio viruses can be cultured in tissues, which led to the development by others of a successful vaccine against the virus.
