Artist's Description

Frederick Augustus Abel (1827-1902), British chemist. Abel was an expert on military explosives, becoming chemist to the War Department in 1854. Collaborating with Dewar in 1889 he invented 'cordite' which became the standard British military propellant. Abel was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1877, the same year he received a Royal Medal from the Royal Society. He was knighted in 1883, made Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB) in 1891, created a baronet in 1893, and made a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) in 1901.
