Description
Fourier transform. This equation describes patterns in time as a function of frequency. f denotes the Fourier transform, E represents frequency, x represents time (in seconds). It was discovered by French mathematician Joseph Fourier (1768-1830). Fourier transforms are applied when analysing real world oscillating patterns. For example, they are used when analysing the vibrational signal produced by an earthquake or removing noise from old sound recordings. It is also involved in JPEG compression as applied to digital photographs.
