Artist's Description

The formation and extraction of diamonds, cutaway artwork. Most natural diamonds come from the mining of kimberlite. Kimberlite is an igneous rock that is found in the Earth's crust in vertical structures (blue) known as kimberlite pipes. The pipes are formed by explosive eruptions of magma (orange) from below the Earth's surface. Kimberlite, and the diamonds it contains, are excavated from the earth via both open pit mines and underground operations (right).
