Description
Folded rocks. Illustration depicting folded strata of rocks in an exposed rock face. The layers of sediment are distinguished by the curved lines. After the rocks had been laid down, they were subjected to enormous tectonic forces causing them to buckle. The patterns of folds are known as an anticline (left) and a syncline (right). This illustration first appeared in Hutton's Theory of the Earth, published at Edinburgh in 1785.
