Description
Fog-dispersal system, 1940s. Known as the Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation (FIDO), this system was developed during the Second World War to enable RAF aircraft to land in foggy conditions. Petrol was burnt along runways to disperse the fog, as seen here in 1948 in a Civil Aviation version of the system. The man in the foreground is operating valves that control the flow of petrol to the burners. This is Blackbushe Aerodrome, near London, UK, which had a Haigill Mark 5 installation that civil aircraft could request if needed. The costs of the system meant that it was officially abandoned in the early 1960s.
