Description
Foetal liver. Macro photograph of a section through the abdomen of a 5 month old foetus. The front of the body is at bottom. The liver (brown) has various functions, including the detoxification of blood, bile production and storing energy as glycogen. At top centre is the spine. The spinal cord is yellow and the bone of the vertebra is grey. Either side of the spine are the two kidneys (purple), which filter waste products from the blood and excrete it as urine. Below each kidney is an adrenal gland, which releases stress hormones. Below the adrenal gland at right is the pancreas. This organ secretes digestive enzymes and the hormones insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar levels. This slide dates from 1902.
