Artist's Description
Fly agaric mushrooms. Group of fly agaric mushrooms (Amanita muscaria) growing amongst small plants. This mushroom has a bright scarlet cap with distinctive white pyramidal warts. The cap is globose or hemispherical in the smaller younger mushrooms (lower centre) but has flattened in the older ones (upper centre). The common name comes from the habit of breaking the cap into platefuls of milk, used since medieval times to stupefy flies. The mushroom is common in Europe in late summer to autumn among birch trees. The dried caps have long been taken for their hallucinogenic properties, but the effects are unpredictable, and at least one death is attributed to this mushroom.
