Artist's Description

Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) fungi. The fruiting bodies of this fungus (seen here) are bright scarlet in colour, covered by white warts. They are produced in the late summer, preferring habitats that contain birch trees or conifers. They are poisonous but are taken in some cultures for their hallucinogenic compounds ibotenic acid and muscimol, which induce vivid visions and elation.
