Artist's Description
Shuttle flight deck during re-entry. View of the flight deck of Shuttle Discovery as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere at the end of Mission STS- 42. Astronaut Ronald Grabe (commander, left) and Stephen Oswald (pilot, right) are seen wearing the partial pressure suits used by all Shuttle crew during take-off and re-entry. The pink glow seen through the windscreens is due to the air friction generated during the middle stages of re- entry. Mission STS-42 flew from 22 to 30 January 1992, carrying the first International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1) into orbit.
