Artist's Description
First Wright Flyer launch. Local men on a beach near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, with the Wright Flyer on its launching track before its failed flight of 14 December 1903. This aircraft was built and flown by US aviation pioneers the Wright brothers (Orville and Wilbur). Accompanied by two small boys and a dog, the men (from Kill Devil Hills Lifesaving Station) helped move the Wright Flyer from its shed to the incline of this sand dune (Big Kill Devil Hill). Wilbur piloted this flight, but crashed with minor damage shortly after take-off. Three days later, in the repaired Wright Flyer, Orville successfully made the historic first flight in a heaver-than-air machine.
