Artist's Description

First oil well in the USA, 1859. This oil well was constructed in 1859 at Titusville, Pennsylvania, USA, by 'Colonel' Edwin Laurentine Drake (1819-1880, seated in foreground). On 27 August 1859, after two months of drilling when the well was 23 metres deep, oil was struck and the rush for 'black gold' began. This photograph was by New York photographers Brown Brothers.
