Artist's Description

First anatomy theatre. This viewing theatre, part of the University of Padua, Italy, was the first of its kind in the world. Built in 1595, dissections were performed in front of medical students. The university was often at odds with the Catholic Church for some of its teachings, and included Galileo Galilei as one of its teachers. The anatomy theatre is now preserved as a museum.
