Description
First aircraft landing on a ship, with crowds of sailors watching. The aircraft (left) is landing on a platform constructed on the afterdeck of the USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser 4, ACR-4). This historic landing took place in San Francisco Bay, USA, on 18 January 1911. The aircraft was flown by the US aviation pioneer Eugene Burton Ely (1886-1911), who had also accomplished the first take-off from a ship, doing so on 14 November 1910.
