Description
Fibre optics. Several optical fibres emitting coloured light. Optical fibres are made from flexible glass that has a high refractive index. Each fibre is coated with an outer protective layer that has a low refractive index. This enables the transmission of light. The light beams which emerge from the end of each fibre have been completely internally reflected. The light travels along the entire cable with little or no absorption. These optical fibres are used to illuminate aircraft instrumentation. Bundles of optical fibres may also be used to carry images, or high volumes of data such as computer files or telephone conversations.
