Artist's Description

Light microscopy of unerupted fetal teeth. Teeth in part grow from the surface epithelium of the oral cavity together with a component of the underlying connective tissues. The curved/serrated epithelial surfaces of each tooth resemble the final shape of the tooth. It is here that enamel (dark red ) is produced by the overlying ameloblast cells and the dentin (thinner layer, blue) of the crown is being secreted by odontoblasts bordering the inner tooth core. This central core region will become the root of the tooth with blood vessel and nerve supply. Magnification x70 when printed at 10 cm height.
